12 – 19 August 2024
Steeton in The Yorkshire Dales National Park North Yorkshire
The ‘democratic chair’ is a Windsor chair concept from well-respected American chair maker, Curtis Buchannan, who kindly gave me permission to teach this course in the UK.
You can choose between either an arm chair or a side chair (both pictured).
This ‘democratic’ chair making course will be run by me at the workshop of Peter Kovacs, of Soulwood Creations: https://soulwoodcreations.com/

Description
What’s involved?
We will meet at Peter’s workshop for a brew at 9am on day one, with the aim of starting at 9.30.
The course will cover making all the parts and the assembly of the chair, using locally sourced green wood. Students will spend seven days in the tranquil surroundings of the village of Steeton in The Yorkshire Dales National Park, learning to cleave, shape, bend and carve wood into all the required parts to build their chair.
No previous experience is necessary, this course is open to beginners and experienced wood workers alike, all necessary tuition and tools will be provided.
Accommodation
There is no accommodation available on site, but the surrounding area is in the heart of tourist land, so the full range of camping through to quality hotels is available.
The concept behind the chair is that it is designed to be accessible to anyone who wants to make one, unlike with most Windsor chairs, where the list of required tools and the specific nature of the
wood required can be overwhelming.
The real beauty of this course is that students should be able to go
away and reproduce the chair at home with minimal tool costs.
Refreshments
Lunch and a steady stream of brews will be provided each day.
